The age-old myths of fighting the signs of aging are promises that surely defy the laws of nature. Capitalism is encouraging us to fight a battle that we will ultimately lose; creating a negative imaginary that thrives on vulnerability and low self-esteem.

Cosmetic treatments have become increasingly popular because they are quicker, less painful and far more understated than plastic surgery. Many treatments are being hailed as a 'lunch hour' facelift because of the speed in which the procedures can now be carried out. Treatments available include chemical peels which strip the skin of its first layer revealing a new smoother brighter skin, Botox, a diluted food poison used to temporarily paralyse muscles and Collagen, a solution made from the connective tissue of cows or pigs commonly injected into the lip to give a more voluptuous pout. Doesn’t sound so great now, does it?
It seems distressing to think that people are readily injecting these solutions into their bodies without much hesitation to the possible side effects, all in the name of vanity. Research conducted in the last ten years demonstrates that more than £6 million is spent on anti-ageing creams, 65,000 people in the UK undergo cosmetic surgery, out of which an astounding 90% are performed to reverse the signs of ageing. A survey undertaken revealed that many who undergo plastic surgery to reverse the appearance of ageing do so because they fear that their job may be on the line if they start to look old.
It is easy to see how the industry thrives on low self-esteem, promoting a feeling of inferiority that encourages people to indulge in various anti-ageing treatments in a pursuit to regain their self worth.
Youthfulness is being marketed as something forever obtainable and we are being sold the elixir of life in neatly packaged jars and bottles.
Flawless wrinkle-free skin, full sensuous lips and blushed rosy cheeks are the epitome of youthfulness.
At a very young age we are conditioned to fight the effects of time, but instead we should embrace and celebrate it, as youthful flawless skin is a blank canvas on which the joys and sadness of the years are painted. Each line and wrinkle makes us unique and testifies to a life lived and perhaps should be viewed with fondness, for each one surely tells a story.
