I am cynical about self-help books and I don’t buy them. To me, they offer empty promises and impractical advice to people who generally don’t have the time to put their methods into practice, but I’d like to be proved wrong. Gabriella Goddard’s new book is dubbed the seven-day crash course to master fear and break through any challenge. Even I have time to give this one a go.
So, the idea behind a ‘Gulp’ is this: at times in our lives a challenge crops up that requires us to step outside our comfort zone and brave the unknown. Manifested in the physical feelings of fear and anticipation, a gulp can be overcome or ‘swallowed’. Whether a huge life-changing decision such as a getting a new job or buying a new home, or a life-changing event – a divorce or an illness - has been thrust upon you, this book focuses specifically on embracing and breaking through the challenge.
Broken down into seven days, or chapters, I appreciated the simple, methodical approach and began to warm to Gabriella’s no-nonsense style. And she knows her stuff. Gabriella spent 15 years working in international marketing roles around the world when a personal crisis – finding a lump in her breast – led her to think again about the direction she was going in. So she retrained as a leadership coach and the Gulp! philosophy was born.
Gabriella’s methods are straightforward and systematic. The seven Gulp! principles are further broken down into quick fix tips and long term action plans, and are interspersed with case studies by and about famous people such as Jamie Oliver and Ellen Macarthur and by unknown people, such as Anita in the extract below.
This book succeeds in that I didn’t ever feel I was being spoken down to and there was not a cliche in sight. Whether you are looking for a quick motivational pick-me-up or you are going to follow the full seven-day plan, you’ll find this book pretty inspirational stuff.
