The Fringe has only started a few days ago, but It’s now in full steam: in the middle of the Old Steine gardens the Udderbelly, that is the huge purple upside-down cow tent that works as a main venue of the Festival Fringe, raises its four purple legs up in the grey sky.Tonight’s show are the Caesar Twins, two identical young athletes with bleached hair and sleek, muscular torsos, plus support from singer/gymnast Jennifer Adler and sax player Andre Borges, who fill in the gaps while the twins get ready for the next act. Born in Poland in 1980, Pablo and Pierre Caesar became world champions in acrobatic sports aged 17; their performing career came to a dramatic halt in 2002, when Pablo plummeted from the wheel of death he was performing on. Thanks to intensive hospital care and to his bro’s affectionate help, after six months the twins were ready to perform again as if nothing ever happened. The terrible accident is also recalled during the show thanks to a rear projection of original footage, and is crucial to understand how indivisible the two brothers are. Needless to say, the difficulty, versatility and creativeness of the acrobatics the twins perform is jaw-dropping: they range from an amazing display of physical strength and control when one of the brothers balances on the other’s head or neck, to a surreal upside-down bicycle act; and again from a humorous series of somersaults on an inflatable mat, to a fake battle recalling a videogame, to a wonderfully choreographic act inspired by the story of Castor and Pollux (the twin sons of Zeus) with the athletes wearing red trousers and hanging from white sashes. No matter how demanding the acrobatics are, the Caesar Twins infuse their bravados with sympathy, charm and sexiness. This is surely another of their winning points: be it the ambiguous closeness they sport towards each other or their knowing chivalry towards the female audience, these petite powerhouses are just hot. Of course there is a whole amount of rationality and control behind the entertainment, and this is proved by the extreme cleanness of the acts, both in their concept and performance that comes close to Apollonian sublimity; nothing can be less than perfect in the Caesar Twins show: they can’t disappoint the audience, but most of all they cannot risk another potentially mortal accident. That the two athletes have a solid grasp on their visual outcome and their image is also clear when you are forbidden to take photographs during the show, but at the same time a plethora of stills of the twins in unconventional poses with drinking buddies and girls is projected on a screen on the background. Even on the internet, there is nothing to be found on universal sources like YouTube; as for search engines, they actually have a few pictures, the most part of which are posters or shoots from professional photo sessions. In short, we can say that the twins not only know the rules of acrobatics, but also those of the entertainment business: an air of mystery is always the best enticement. Kudos for that and for all the rest. The Brighton Festival Fringe keeps rolling.
