Something very strange is going on. Suddenly, regardless of any training (or sometimes talent), celebs everywhere think they are fashion designers. It takes years to become a designer. Years slogging away learning how to cut patterns, source fabrics and come up with original ideas. Thousands of wannabe-designers try, and fail, to make a career out of their passion annually. Having a good eye just isn’t enough – you need that extra something. So what makes our favourite famous faces think they know a bias cut from a boob tube? Madonna for H&M kicked off the trend. No sooner had the store announced she was designing a range then swarms of women descended on Oxford Street, determined to pick up their very own Madge tracksuit. Posh Spice has turned her hand to denim, having designed a range for Rock and Republic Jeans. Kylie’s had a go twice, with swimwear at H&M and her own LoveKylie lingerie range. Even Kelly Brook’s had a go, her swimwear range for New Look is soon to start its second season. The two big ones for 2007 are Kate Moss for Topshop (launched on 1 May) and Lily Allen for New Look (launched 9 May). Kate Moss has been queen of the fashion pack for years. With a figure and face which no amount of ageing, or partying, seems to affect, she can do no wrong. She just looks at a fashion trend and it turns to gold. How else can you explain the trend for skin-tight jeans and non-leg-lengthening flat boots? The fashion mags have been banging on about her collection for months. It’s based on her wardrobe (think hot pants, vest tops and barely-there dresses) and there are rumours she’s planning to join the mannequins in the Oxford Street store window on launch day. A much closer guarded secret is the Lily Allen collection, entitled “Lily Loves”. It’s a range of dresses, footwear and jewellery, so it’s a pretty safe bet to say it’ll also be based on her wardrobe. Like Kate, Lily has a very strong sense of style. It may not be to everyone’s taste but she’s often featured on magazine fashion pages and was recently given front row seats at the major Paris shows. But aren’t the celebrities, and the stores, missing the point? Designers don’t just delve into their wardrobes, pull out something they like and recreate it. They create totally new styles. This is how the fashion industry works. Yes, sometimes items or a decade are used as inspiration, but something new is always added, the trend is updated. Another difficulty with these ranges is that the celebrities designing them are famous for their own style. They are known for their look, for the way they put outfits together. They always do their own thing, they are leaders not followers. One thing these women would never do is copy someone else’s style – so why do they expect us to do the same and buy ranges which feature copies of their clothes? Surely it’s time to hand the sketch pads back to the people who really know what they’re doing? If you really want to look good this season look around shops, markets and charity shops for individual and unusual items. Put an outfit together yourself – after all that’s what’s made these “designers” famous in the first place.
