London Fashion Week – Day One

There’s nothing like controversy to kick start fashion week, and it doesn’t come much bigger - or should that be smaller - than the weight debate.

It may have been day one of London Fashion week but it’s the models who were the talk of the town. Despite pressure to ban size zero waifs from the catwalk and introduce fuller figured models London remained a strictly A line and A cup affair.

Ben de LisiTo add insult to industry injury London Fashion week was unofficially opened by high street giant Topshop. Daring to prove that high street chains can lead as well as follow fashion the TS design team displayed a sixty piece collection two weeks before the major European shows. It certainly raised eyebrows but few could deny the grown up collection of maxi dresses, sixties swing jackets and empire line tops with playful coral prints and bold hues displayed innovation and quality to match that of any other designer showcasing this week.

Normal service continued when iconic British fashion designer John Rocha took to the catwalk with his army of fresh faced models. Long hair hung under knitted beanies and lips pouted above layered designs of ruffles and pleats in a palette of soft greys, beiges and pinks. Cropped cargo pants featured heavily alongside legging which continue to be popular amongst the designers.

Eco friendly, Dutch design label Noir also played with the idea of ruffles - this time incorporating a Victorian theme with high necked blouses. Using fair trade and organic fabrics Noir juxtaposed classic tailored jackets and pencil skirts with leather leggings and long gloves to create a collection of rock and roll meets feminine innocence.

Rachel ZoeAfter a day of largely muted collections Delhi based designer Manish Arora’s collection of bold colours, bizarre prints and bird motifs was a welcome injection of eastern spice. A kaleidoscope of zebra skin gloves, floor length gold skirts, Dalmatian spot jackets and multi coloured patchworks reminded everyone that although it was a grey autumn day outside this was very much Spring/ Summer 2007.

Highlights for the rest of the week include the return of 60’s quintessential fashion label Biba, Zandra Rhodes first London collection in twenty years and hot young British designers Jonathan Saunders and Giles Deacon.
