Women of a certain size (over 8) and a certain age (over 18) can breathe a sigh of relief.Yes! Skinny jeans are dead. Long live flares! The first nail was hammered into the skinny-jean coffin in September 2006. Kate Moss appeared with her legs swathed in metres of baggy denim at the Topshop Unique Show. There was a sharp intake of breath from women everywhere. Was Kate toying with us? Was this a one-off, or a new celeb-trend that would never make it down the fashion chain to us mere mortals? Surprisingly, it seems those higher beings on planet-celeb are suffering just as badly from skinny-jean overkill as us. Professional clothes-horse Mischa Barton, actress Chloe Sevigney and princess of the WAGs Coleen McLoughlin have all been spotted sporting long, flowing, denims lately. So it's time to ditch the denim-leggings and slip into something a little more comfortable. It’s about time too – normal trends last a season (return of the body, anyone?), this has clung on for years. And no matter what you read in magazines, skinny-jeans are not a good look. First of all you have to make sure you haven’t eaten anything over the size of a Satsuma for the last week to avoid the dreaded muffin-top. Then there’s the shoe situation. Too flat and your legs look like lumpy chipolatas bursting out of their skins. Too high and you look like you’re trying too hard. First up there’s a flares-based myth that needs dispelling. Fashion editors everywhere would have us believe flares are extremely hard to wear. What, harder than pouring your flabby flesh into skin-tight, non-stretch, tapered denim? No, this is a myth started by skinny size 6’s who love nothing better than to show off how concave their stomachs are since they gave up eating. The truth is; flares and easy to wear. For a stylish day look team them with a tucked in tailored shirt (the tummy conscious among you stop snorting, there’s some great high-waisted styles which might just as well be called girdle-jeans). If you’re after something a little more casual, flares look just as great with a tunic top and hairband. Think 1970’s flower-girl with a modern finish. With a slinky top and funked up hair, flares provide the perfect jazzed up disco look. Which leads to the other great thing about flares; shoes. Wedges, killer heels and flats make look flares look fabulous. Just makes sure your flares don’t cover your feet entirely. You don’t want to look like you’re rolling along on wheels, or gliding through the air. Convinced? Well pop into pretty much any high street shop and bag yourself a pair of these wondrous, leg-lengthening trousers. Gap and Oasis both have versions available as do all the big denim brands (Levi, Wrangler). If you want to be totally on trend there’s a great high-waisted pair available from Topshop (K Jean). So, what are you waiting for? Go get buying! After all, it’s best to take advantage of this trend now. The next wearable piece of fashion isn’t due for at least another 4 years.
