Daniel Day-Lewis is surely one of the most handsome, charming and cultured actors in Hollywood.
But he has a penchant for baddies. Five years ago he gave an outstanding performance as Bill “The Butcher” Cutting in Gangs Of New York by Martin Scorsese; now he is giving the creeps to the audience of the Berlin Film Festival as Daniel Plainview, the protagonist of There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Plainview is “an oilman”, as he loves to describe himself, who digs oil wells in America at the turn of the century. He is a champion of greed and ambition, and never shuns from acts of cruelty and calculations in order to reach his goal: power. Heard it all before? Let’s have a chat with Daniel Day-Lewis about it.

Daniel Day-Lewis When I accept a role in a film, I always feel drawn into the character and into his story. The impression I always have when I read a script is that the final decision of accepting a role is made only if the script inspires me. From that moment, I want to become that character, I want to live the life of another man.
nuts4chic What effect does that have on your real life?
This is still mysterious to me, but I sense that my own life is so much enriched when I approach the life of my character. Him and I court each other, circle each other for a while. When I read the script to There Will Be Blood, saying yes to the role of Daniel Plainview was unavoidable.
