Daniel Day-Lewis interview

nuts4chic How did you find it to work with young Paul Dano? You have very emotional scenes together at the end of the film!

Daniel Day-Lewis In 2005 my wife (director Rebecca Miller) had made a film called The Ballad Of Jack And Rose, starring me and Paul, so I already knew him and his talent. I trusted Paul from the start, whatever Paul does on set rings simply true, his real self is still recognizable and that’s what you need to know.

nuts4chic What do you mean?

I think, when you have to play a story in which there is a strong relationship, and this relationship requires a collision, you have to take extra care: if you have to, say, slap the other actor, he might be mistaken and think that you have a real ill will. So, for things to work out, you have to create a working partnership based on trust and friendship. The more conflict there is between the roles, the greater friendship and trust you need to build between the actors. That’s what happened between Paul and me.

nuts4chic You also made an extraordinary work on your voice; you sound like John Huston!

Daniel Day-Lewis I’m not inclined to talk about this, I’ve explained it so many times! I don’t know how to separate the work on my voice from all the rest of my work on a character. The voice is one side of one character and all these sides have to merge together. I had lots of time to prepare for this role, thankfully we had enough money, so I tried to engage to the entire life of Daniel Plainview. If I separate his voice from the rest of his characteristics, I feel like I’m dismembering this character, so even talking about this process doesn’t feel right.

Daniel Day-Lewis Read our There Will Be Blood review

nuts4chic There Will Be Blood is nominated to the Academy Awards as Best Film, and director Paul Thomas Anderson is nominated as Best Director. Do you expect the film to win?

Daniel Day-Lewis We want America to give us all possible awards! This film is very different from Paul’s usual style. I think he changed because every story has its right style. Directors work like this, they find the best way to tell their stories. It would have been strange for him to tell this story the same way as his other films. Doing a film is very similar to digging for oil, because in both cases you don’t know the result of your efforts, yet you keep going. Then you might get greedy, you expend time on set, you don’t stay with your family. Making a film can make you go crazy!
