Colourful, crazy and playful: this is the formula for The Darjeeling Limited, Anderson’s latest bitter comedy cum Bildungsroman.Three brothers (Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody) embark in a trip through India in order to find their lost harmony and loyalty, to experience some wholesale spirituality but especially to find their mother, who deserted their father’s funeral and hid in a monastery in India. The brothers will go through a number of adventures, both comical and tragic, until they can say they really love each other again – and they can do without the memory of their parents. The film presents a series of false ending, but even after the ending credits stop to roll, we can imagine the Whitman brothers in a new adventure. The press conference is one of the most crowded of this festival: among others are Schwartzman, Brody, Bill Murray who plays a short cameo as a businessman, director Wes Anderson (the guy is hot!) and co-scriptwriter Roman Coppola, another son of Francis Ford. For abvious reasons, Owen Wilson is not there; the actor has attempted suicide last Monday and is now recovering. That’s why, before the press conference starts, Wes Anderson makes a statement: “We are excited to be here, it means a great deal to us and to Owen, who wishes he could be here now. We miss him very much, obviously he can’t be here but he is doing very well and when is ready will speak for himself much better than us. In the meantime, please help us to protect his privacy, and allow us to talk only about the movie”. A warm applause follows: the whole Festival wishes Wilson’s best. Wilson’s act has a strong resonance, especially because when you see the film, it is clear that it has been done between friends and the chemistry the many souls of it is magical and undeniable. Mr. Murray, yesterday Woody Allen talked about comedy and tragedy: how do you see the relationship between the two? Because you acted in both genres.
Bill Murray Well, this is a very tragic question. I’m very proud to work in comedy, even if sometimes they go tragic at box office! But it’s the same acting work. It’s easier to make people cry than laugh, as you’ll see the next days here in Venice. But in comedy you have to be as truthful as you can be, with no help from music, lights, and you can’t be very handsome. There’s been a speculation whether your character could be a doppelganger of the father of the three guys. What attracts you to work with Anderson? Bill Murray Another tragic question. Am I the mystery father? You’ll see an announcement in tomorrow’s paper. About Wes, well I finally have the role I always cherished: lots of time away in India just hanging around doing one day work, fly back to America, then India again, then Venice, drinking, having good time only for 5 minutes on screen. This is what I cherish of this man! Mr. Anderson, what is so attractive of India? Wes Anderson The experience of making the film is a reflection of what the film became: a study on relationship, spirit, affection. Being in India helped a lot. Clearly in your films the main subjects are dysfunctional families. Where is this rooted? Wes Anderson I always wanted to make a film about three brothers cause I have two and we were always fighting, and yet we’re the closest people in the world. Also, there is a brother-like relationship between me and the three Wilson brothers, and Roman and Jason, we’re all like brothers! And when it came to make a film and join together, we realized how hard it is for us to write a strong female character! We have nine guys in the film and just one woman! This spiritual journey is surprisingly very visual. Wes Anderson This film was about discovering things, not invent them. Many things we just found and didn’t build any set, apart from the train: that was painted by a guy we met there. At a certain point we had 50 guys painting elephants! Mr. Brody, you were the only newcomer to Anderson’s universe. How was it?
Adrien Brody I was so happy to be welcome by him. We got along very well. There’s a real bond in this film, something you don’t even get with great actors, it’s real. The journey to India was very important personally for all of us, an amazing spiritual experience. Wes Anderson After I cast my main actors I wanted to work with Adrien Brody because Owen and I had discovered him many years ago but didn’t have his contact, and that’s why we didn’t work together before. Mr. Coppola, how was it to write the film? Roman Coppola Wes and I have known each other for ten years. One day he said “I want to do a film about three brothers on a train”. I thought it was rubbish, but then started talking about our friends, and what people said about them, old stories… so we got the feeling that telling stories to each other was already the process of making the script. And what kind of guy is Owen? Adrien Brody It’s been incredible to work with all the cast; Owen has tremendous sense of humour, he’s mischievous. It was a pleasure to work with him and he’s such a talented actor. One day he was supposed to be walking backwards doing a monologue, we shot the scene many times and he developed his monologue every time very well. I was impressed. I’ll never forget this life experience. Mr. Anderson, what is your next project? Wes Anderson No more dysfunctional families! It’s going to be an animated film with wolves and foxes.
