The young star of Heroes is radiant today. Hayden Panettiere is in Berlin to present the latest film she stars in, Fireflies In The Garden by first time director Dennis Lee.
She stars as Jane, a teenager with some health problems who spends the summer at her elder sister Lisa’s family, the Taylors.
Although Lisa Taylor is subdued to her abusive husband Charles and the environment is not quite pleasant, Jane finds a friend in Michael, Lisa’s son who is actually only slightly younger than her.
nuts4chic Your character, young Jane Lawrence, is angry and complex. How did you develop it?
Hayden Panettiere I think it always helps to have a personal “back story” to rely on, whether you develop your character with the help of the director or by yourself. In this case this device helped me a lot: Jane is going through difficult time in her life, she is angry, she is ill, she tries to build a relationship with the Taylor family but feels rejected; so, when she finds common ground with Michael the bond is created, and together they rock! Dennis (the director) says that the audience of this film is testifying a very difficult time for the Taylor family, and it’s up to the audience to build up their “back story”.
nuts4chic There is a very thrilling scene between young Jane and Michael: the two teenagers seem to feel attracted and are dangerously shifting towards a forbidden desire… the impression is that the director had shot a more explicit scene that was cut off afterwards. So what really happens between Jane and Michael?
Hayden Panettiere You seem to already have made up your mind and now ask for confirmation! But this film is not that much about what is said, but what remains unsaid between the characters. I know what happened between Jane and Michael, the director knows as well… but you don’t need to know.

nuts4chic How was it to work with director Dennis Lee and all the stars in the cast?
Hayden Panettiere I have to say that you can never, ever, not even in a million years be able to tell that this is Dennis’ first film! I was amazed at his expertise. I said many times that directors have to constantly set the atmosphere on set: if they are uptight and stressed out all the set is stressed and uptight. But Dennis created such a wonderful and collaborative environment, where he allowed us to be actors in the real sense, to bring out our own ideas and potentiality; he was also very open minded about these ideas and how we discussed them, which I think is very difficult for someone who has lived with the script for so long.
nuts4chic You’re just 18 and are the most popular character in Heroes. Did you expect all this success in your career?
Hayden Panettiere I’m nor sure if it’s really so popular! I think no one expect that kind of success from themselves. I can say that just being on the show has turned my world upside down. I’ve been acting for a really long time, and it’s a privilege and pleasure to work with so many just fabulous actors. I always said that best training you can possibly get is to be on set with great actors. So I was there with Julia Roberts, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson and Ryan Reynolds, observing them and silently learning from them as the shoot went on. It’s just been a wonderful ride to be able to sit up here with such incredible actors whom I respect so much and had a wonderful time with, it’s a privilege to be were I am.
nuts4chic You have your own action figure, 7 inches tall, coming out on the market in a few weeks. How do you feel about it? Is it spooky to know that millions people can play with your body and your face?
Hayden Panettiere Oh God, it’s taller than me! It’s crazy, it’s fun, it’s fantastic. But I have my own original action figure. My cousin is a huge action figure fan and made one of me. It’s so cool!
