As his new movie Die Hard 4.0 is out now, actor Justin Long talks about being Bruce Willis' sidekick, his dreams of becoming a priest and laughs about eventually landing a role where he can play his own age.
Bruce Willis' Die Hard character John McClane is one of the most iconic film heroes of the last 20 years. A buff, tough, take-no-prisoners hard man, he's as happy with a gun in his hand as he is swinging from a building with a heroine at his side and a quip on his lips.
Justin Long, meanwhile, is his sidekick. He's quite handy with a
computer.
Speaking of his Die Hard 4.0 character Matt Farrell, Justin says: "He's a sidekick - people go to a Die Hard movie to see Bruce Willis shooting a gun. I'm the guy who is tagging along, the computer hacker, and that hasn't been part of the franchise so I'm terrified to see if it's received well."
Though he's building up a healthy CV of his own - with roles in
Dodgeball, Galaxy Quest, Idiocracy and That 70s Show - the 29-year-old
actor is quite happy staying out of the limelight on this one. Which,
for the most part, meant staying out of the line of fire.

"The fans of Die Hard will be happy to know I don't do a lot of the
action stuff," Justin laughs. "A lot of it was Bruce doing it. I'm kind
of more on the sideline. They would have me conveniently kidnapped when
he was doing the really cool shoot with the jet.
"I always wanted to do it, but my job was a lot less flattering - more
whimpering. It reminded me of being a kid - there are a lot of childlike
moments in this movie when you are playing cops and robbers and you
never want to be the guy who gets held up (and ends up) crying and being
held hostage. You want to be the guy with the gun, so I had to swallow a
lot of those urges and deal with the reality."
