Let's Make Bread!

First of all, let me make one thing really clear here, there is only one purpose for sliced white, processed bread.

That is to scrunch it up in your hand until it forms a disgusting doughy ball of rubbish, and then use it for target practise! Why anyone would want to eat that, or give it to their children is beyond me, and now they advertise this bread without crusts!

BreadPart of a child’s development is to learn to chew, to experience tastes and textures, something that a bland square of ‘nothing’ really is not going to do.

Also, just as something to think about, when you buy fresh bread you have to eat it the same day, basically because by the following morning it is like a brick. Now, you can buy bread that is designed to last 7 days in your kitchen. What on earth is in there to make it last that long? Whatever it is, the more you eat of it the more you are filling yourself with it. Worth thinking about isn’t it?

Here in the Mediterranean the idea of giving children, or anyone, bread other than that baked today is simply not in the vocabulary. Part of the morning ritual is to buy, or make, your bread for the day. Children have great chunks of crusty, freshly baked, bread stuffed with olive oil, roasted vegetables, fresh cheeses all sorts, the point being, they experience taste, textureand real food. It is no wonder that children are suffering from being overweight, hyperactive, distant and generally fed up when they are being fed junk.

Remember who you are and what you look like is a reflection of what goes in and that applies to children and adults. Now, in the interests of developing your skills, and your children if you have them, I want you to start learning to make bread. Not in a bread maker, which I loath with a passion, but with your hands.

Understand food, feel food, get to know what is good, understand when the reactions within food take place, feel bread change as you make it from dough, into a soft warm belly like puppy dough that is going to cook into the most delicious bread you have had in a long time. Fill your home with the smell of freshly baked bread, and there is nothing more homely than fresh bread cooking.

So, let us start with the basic bread recipe and then build from there, once you have learnt to do this, you can begin to experiment with all kinds of flavours, the list is endless, and trust me, once you get into the habit of fresh bread, this goes for that you make or purchase on a daily basis, you will never want to go back to eating that rubbish they call sliced bread again.
