Tom and Kate wed (but were already married!)
Well, we've been waiting for this much-anticipated wedding for some time and finally, on Saturday, Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes in a candlelit
Scientology ceremony at Castello Odescalchi in Bracciano, Italy.
The couple arrived separately – Katie turned up in a limousine first
followed by Tom who was spotted in a black Mercedes van.
With torches burning from the battlements of the 15th-century castle, the couple exchanged vows out of sight of the thousands of onlookers and paparazzi camped outside or perched on window ledges and balconies.
The anxious press were even made to wait until 8:30pm (local time) to find out the famous couple were indeed man and wife as proclaimed by Cruise’s publicist Arnold Robinson.
A fireworks display from a castle tower later lit up the sky, winning
applause from those who had braved rain to stay to the end.
The bride and groom wore Giorgio Armani; Holmes in an ivory silk
crystal-studded gown and Cruise in a dark suit for the ceremony presided by
a Scientologist minister and later cut a five-tier white chocolate cake,
according to Cruise's publicist, Arnold Robinson.
Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli serenaded the couple at the wedding reception,
according to a statement issued by Robinson.
However, it may come as a shock, but the bride and groom were actually
already married according to Robinson’s statement, which said: “As is
customary for couples marrying outside of the United States, Cruise and
Holmes officialised their marriage in Los Angeles prior to their departure
for Italy.”
The couple wed in front of celebrity friends, including Victoria Beckham;
Andrea Bocelli; Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith; Richard Gere; Brooke
Shields and husband Chris Henchy; Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony; Jim
Carrey and Jenny McCarthy and Mission: Impossible III director JJ Abrams.
Also there were their seven-month-old daughter Suri and Cruise's adopted
children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman - Isabella, 15, and Connor, 11.
Cruise was supported by his mother Mary Lee Mapother and sisters Marian, Lee
Anne and Cass, while Holmes was walked up the aisle by her lawyer father
Martin Holmes. Her mother Kathleen, brother Martin Jr and sisters Tamera,
Holly and Nancy were also in attendance.
The twice-divorced Cruise is an ardent follower of the church founded by
science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Holmes, 17 years his junior, was
raised a Catholic.
This is the first wedding for Katie, who ended her previous engagement to
Chris Klein in February 2005.
The celebrations were estimated to cost over 2 million euros ($2.5 million).
However, excited fans of the Hollywood couple were most disappointed to only
get a brief glimpse of Cruise through the darkened window of his black
Mercedes.
Frenzied excitement in the run-up to the wedding gave away to disappointment
among the throngs waiting outside once word spread the wedding was over.
Bottles and litter were left behind in a square teeming with hopeful fans
earlier in the day.
“I'm really disappointed, they came to have their wedding here and it would
have been fair to say at least a little hello from far away,” Michele Pagano
told Reuters, who had hoped to take pictures with his mobile phone outside
the venue.
Congratulations to the Bride and Groom!
