Are you the sort of person who goes gaily in to work on Mondays, loves
having a shower during a thunderstorm, or smugly bottles up your anger
towards your partner to 'keep the peace'?
Be afraid, be very afraid - those actions could hold hidden risks to
your health, according to new research.
Instead of feverishly counting our carbs, worrying about the latest food
scare, or living in fear of the next superbug, perhaps we should look
closer to home at what we may dismiss as simple day-to-day habits or
routines.
Author Anahad O'Connor has painstakingly trawled through the work of
scientists and other experts for his new, quirky book, Don't Go To Work
On Mondays.
He says: "We all focus on the latest health scare - whether it's bird
flu or some hospital bug - but I found that it's the things we do daily,
without a thought, that may be more of a threat to our health.
"Going to work on Mondays raises our risk of a heart attack, and even
birthdays should be celebrated with care as they're another hazardous
occasion."
He discovered many other surprising medical consequences from even
apparently healthy pursuits.
Cross-country cycling, which the 26-year-old researcher enjoys, can be a
hazardous to our sex life it seems.
Smiling ruefully, he says: "The news hit me like a ton of bricks that
scientists have found that the more a person rides a bike the greater
his risk of impotence or loss of libido."
