Pedal Peril
Scientists found in 1998 that male cyclists in their twenties and
thirties had a higher rate of erectile dysfunction (impotence) than a comparable group of male runners.
Anahad explains: "When a man sits on a bike, a critical artery that runs through the perineum and delivers blood to the penis is squashed, much like a straw being flattened. It usually bounces back, but eventually if it is flattened one too many times it stays that way."
Women are probably affected as well and can end up with similar damage, he says.
The best cycle seats are those which protect the perineum and force a rider to sit back, and it helps to point the saddle downward a bit. Riders should stand up every now and then for a couple of minutes to relieve the pressure.
Pull The Plug

Anahad says: "A bolt of lightening that hits a building - even one that is protected against severe weather - can travel through plumbing, into metal pipes and wiring and shock anyone who comes into contact with a tap or appliance."
Metal pipes are not only excellent conductors of electricity, but they also carry tap water laden with impurities that help conduct electrical current.
In October 2006 a 27-year-old Croatian woman was brushing her teeth at home when lightening struck her building and made it's way to her tap and out through her body.
Music Menace
Anahad says: "The most pervasive - and yet widely unknown threat - to our eardrums are those sleek MP3 players we all carry around these days.
"The sound they produce can soar to 100 decibels - louder than a
lawnmower."
Loud continuous noise, he points out, can harm the extremely sensitive hair cells in the inner ear as well as the hearing nerve. "All it takes to get to this point are repeated doses of noise at levels between 90 decibels and 140 decibels."
Also, as small insertable earphones aren't as efficient at blocking out background noise, there is more incentive to turn up the volume, which many of us do.
