Don't Worry, Be Happy
Worrying is a national past-time for Britons. The average person spends 27 days a year worrying - and where you live influences what you worry about. Pinpoint your worry, find out if it matches your location and also how to cope with life's anxieties.

"It might be better to recognise that a
lot of life can be boring, hard work and
it's more fulfilling to enjoy the small
pleasures and life's journey."

Chronic Worriers

Phillip Hodson, a Fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, says: "Although worrying has long been known as our national obsession it's alarming to learn just how many people are chronic worriers, particularly as worrying is a central part of all anxiety orders and most depression."

That's confirmed by statistics suggesting that 26 million have fallen ill due to worry. All too often people fail to seek help with their problems, with 28% of Britons bottling them up, and one in 50 driven to talk to their pets. Only one in 30 seeks professional help.

Hodson advises: "Talking your worries through with someone - whether a friend, family or a professional - can be an enormous help and help people put things into perspective. That's what people are finding so hard, and it means they can't take effective action to solve them. Worry is the paralysing emotion that leaves us like rabbits trapped staring into the headlights."

He believes that one of the causes of worry is that in general people
have unrealistic expectations of their lives. "There's a belief nowadays that we are entitled to fame, success and a general trend to constantly compare ourselves with others. Consequently people become over-anxious and stressed and dissatisfied as they desperately try to reach goals which for many are unattainable.

"It might be better to recognise that a lot of life can be boring, hard
work and it's more fulfilling to enjoy the small pleasures and life's
journey."

Richard Rubin's chronic worrying inspired him to found the website ReallyWorried.com

He has suffered problems from bereavement to unemployment and debt and says: "I'm not surprised by the research even though it shows that most people are worried - whether it's about something monumental like their partner cheating on them to something relatively simple to sort like getting to grips with technology."

Although around 30% of people turn to their partners for advice, and one in three turn to their parents, Rubin says: "Most people, like myself, don't like to burden others and it's often hard to find a place to get help and advice. That's why I set up the site so people can share their experience and advice."

Find out whether you're at risk of being a worrier, whether you live in a 'worry risk' area, and how to cope with worrying.
