CHOCOLATE TO GO!

Choose one of these six strategies for beating those chocolate cravings:

:: Have a banana: Chocolate lovers might scoff but dietician Jacqui
Lowdon says, "People often crave chocolate when they're tired and
haven't eaten for a long period. That's because their blood sugar drops and they crave a quick hit of sugar which chocolate gives.

"Banana's a good substitute as it has a comforting, soft texture and
sweet taste but releases the sugar more slowly with a longer lasting
effect on energy levels." Another alternative is dried fruit or
wholemeal bread.

The pay-off could be a trimmer waistline. To lose 1-2lbs a week you need to reduce your calorie intake on average by about 500 a day. One chocolate bar contains up to 300 calories so even scoffing one a day could seriously damage the chances of a new slim you.

:: After-dinner treat: Only eating chocolate when you already feel full after a meal has been found in research to reduce the craving.

Dr Leigh Gibson, bio-psychologist at Roehampton University, says: "It's about trying to relearn a habit, so instead of eating chocolate when you want it, avoid that and eat it when you don't.

"A study found that volunteers who limited themselves to a small amount of chocolate around 20 to 30 minutes after a meal managed to wean themselves off their habit."

:: Do your homework: Taking a 12-week course to beat the craving may sound like hard work but one offers 'sweeteners' - a pressie each week to encourage you to stay on track and willpower boosting emails.

Beyond Chocolate is an online virtual workshop, and users receive two emails weekly as well as a pink parcel. The latter contains items such as a diary where you note how you feel when you tuck into something sweet, or a sand timer so you wait one minute before ripping open that wrapper.

It can be helpful in identifying a pattern in your cravings and boosting self-discipline. A course costs £150: www.beyondchocolate.co.uk
