speculation that they're more than 'just good friends'. The experts
discuss if you can really be best mates with the opposite sex and how to tell if there's potential for a relationship.

Emily Dubberley, author of You Must Be My Best Friend Because I Hate You [Fusion Press], believes a close male chum can make the ideal partner.

"If you both want the same thing then a friendship can be a great basis for sex or a relationship," she says.

"You already know you like each other and with any luck, trust and
respect each other too, which is essential for a relationship."

But the course of true love never does run smoothly, so it's important to be 100% sure of what you both want before you go jumping in at the relationship deep end.

"If one of you wants a quick fumble and the other wants love, marriage and babies then things can get problematic," Dubberley says. "Your best bet is to talk about it seriously before leaping in there. Give yourselves enough time to think about what you're doing before taking the plunge.

"If it all goes wrong, in the long-run you could lose a friend which can be tougher than losing a sexual partner," she warns.
