Love is renting a Harley
by Max Edwards Max Edwards, born-again biker back in the saddle for a year, swaps his 500cc Suzuki for 1450cc Harley-Davidson - but only for the day.
WHAT would you like for your birthday - new pair of socks, after-shave?
No thanks, I'd like a Harley-Davidson.
Apparently, that's exactly what one lucky 50-year-old got this month, bought by his wife and gift-wrapped and delivered to his door by his
local Harley dealer. Now why on earth didn't I marry a woman like that?
If your birthday budget doesn't run to a new motorcycle (and let's be honest, most don't), there is an alternative.
Harley-Davidson's motorcycle hire scheme, which operates from a handful of dealers across the UK, means you can hire a bike for a more birthday-friendly budget starting at £80 .
A hell's angel for a day (sex, alcohol and fighting not included); Arnold Schwartzenegger, Terminator II style; Peter Fonda in Easy Rider; you can be any of these.
I started riding bikes when I was 16, got a car at 20, but never lost the craving to be back on two wheels. I'd obviously been whining on about it more than I thought because, my wife suddenly said: "Look, if you want a bike that badly, you should get one."
I didn't wait for her to change her mind, I booked a training day to get back in the swing of things and got myself a fairly mild-mannered Suzuki GS500, which I now use for commuting and riding for pleasure.
