Boasting a range of sporty motors and a 'proper' rear-wheel drive layout, the car delivers thrills by the bucket-load when you're in the mood, yet is quite happy to burble along at a more sedate pace if you want other people to see you. The TF is as docile as a supermini when it comes to parking and the manual hood arrangement is simplicity itself. And when winter comes you can also fit the (optional) hard top, making the TF one of the most versatile and affordable drop-tops around.

Citroen Pluriel

Another company that's not exactly minting it at the moment is Smart. The firm's Roadster may be the more obvious summer motor, but it is the older, more practical ForTwo Cabriolet that is more compelling.

The city runabout's looks are definitely from another planet, while the two-seater cabin and modest amount of storage space will have you planning excursions more carefully than if taking a more conventional motor.

As a reward for your dedication to the cause, the Cabriolet boasts a full-length powered roof a la 2VC, and the ability to be transformed into a proper roofless rascal.

For a more conventional styling treatment and similar grin-inducing fun, check out Daihatsu's dinky little Copen - a classic Porsche Cabriolet look alike that has shrunk in the wash.

Definitely ploughing its own furrow is the Citroen C3 Pluriel. The first part of its name gives you a hint as to its origins, but nothing can prepare you for what it can do, save for actually getting out there and driving it. If you know of another car that is a practical hatch one minute, slick convertible then stylish pillarless roadster the next, Citroen would like to hear from you.

And no summer car compilation would be complete without Mazda's iconic MX-5 roadster. That it's still worthy of inclusion despite first wowing buyers over a decade and a half ago goes to prove how popular this car remains.
