Five Ways to Show Your Man Romance
by Neely Steinberg
Men and women can often have very different ideas as to what constitutes romance.
Typically, women are swept off their feet by such things as candlelit dinners and dancing under the moonlight – the kind of scenes in Hollywood romantic comedies that we dismiss as cheesy but secretly desire. Men, on the other hand, view romance in an entirely different way, but by no means does this indicate they crave romance any less than women do.
Unfortunately, most women are conditioned to think romance is solely for the fairer sex, and they are therefore clueless as to how to bestow romantic gestures upon their partners. After hundreds, maybe thousands, of hours of personal research (i.e. dating), I’ve compiled a list of the top five ways to show romance to your guy.
- ESPN your way to his heart.
It’s no secret that sports teams and sex rank atop the list of men’s favorite pastimes. While most women don’t take issue with the sex part of the equation, they often have trouble factoring in a man’s obsession with professional sports. But, although we hate when our significant others would rather spend an entire Sunday in their skivvies (let’s hope they’re not tighty whities), plastered to the television, beer in one hand, balls in the other, watching every kind of sporting event known to mankind instead of enjoying a picnic in the park with us, we must accept their fascination as an unalterable truth. If you want to show your man the ultimate gesture of romance, develop an obsession of your own with his favorite sports team. And when I say obsession, I mean OBSESSION – player stats, breaking news, latest quotes, team history, jock strap sizes. Become his well-informed companion at the games; veg out on Sundays with him (bonus: in your underwear, too); talk sports with his friends. To your boyfriend or husband, you’ll now be in a fantasy league of your own.
- Happy feet.
While women may crave the L-bomb (“I love you”) and other affectionate words as far as bonding and romance goes, a man appreciates more hands-on gestures. And no, don’t go there. I’m talking about a foot rub, of course! Nothing says I love you more than a woman’s offer to deal with a man’s smelly, sweaty feet.
- A big pizza pie…that’s amore.
A dozen, long-stemmed roses and reservations at a swanky, five-star restaurant may be the perfect way to woo women, but men (and their wallets) have no problem chilling out with a few brewskis and a tasty pizza pie. Show him your low-maintenance side and indulge in a night on the couch with a pepperoni and sausage pizza and a six-pack of Budweiser.
- Listen, don’t solve.
When men confide in their significant others about problems they may be having – such as, troubles at work or with family – they usually don’t want solutions; they just want you to listen. Instead of going into solution-mode, just be his sounding board, even a small kiss or a gentle hug will do. Empathize and support him, and allow him to solve his own dilemmas. You’re ability to provide understanding and a friendly ear is more romantic than any quick fix answer.
- Silence is golden.
Women have a tendency to bond through constant chatter; men do the opposite: They build attachments and connections through silence. So, the next time you’re dying to talk to your man about Paris Hilton’s latest panty-less antics, ease off a little, and show him that you can comfortably be in his presence without words. Lose yourself in one another and the joy of silence.
There you have it: Five romantic ways to woo your guy. And remember, the more romance you show your partner, the more he’ll be inclined to return the favor. Just be sure to remind him that diamonds are a girl’s best friend…not SportsCenter.
