Big did commit to Carrie in the end but that doesn't
happen in real life

A Big-Willoughby may even love you and deep down know that you are wonderful, but he will never be able to commit to you. Unfortunately, Sex and the City did a huge disservice to women everywhere by allowing Carrie to end up with Mr. Big in the series finale. In the real world, this never, let me repeat, never happens. SATC gave women everywhere a false sense of hope by coupling the commitment-phobe business tycoon with the neurotic, shoe-loving sex columnist. Please, don’t get your hopes up ladies; this type of man is not for you. And I don’t know about anybody else, but I certainly don’t want to wait around until I’m 40 years old for my weak in the knees, “can’t live without you” kind of love.

Besides, even if this type of love does exist, I’m not too sure it would come from an unhealthy, on-again/off-again, non-committal, roll in the hay every now and then, cheat on your beautiful and loving boyfriend Aidan kind of relationship. Jane Austen got it right when she had the passionate and romantic Marianne fall in love with the kind and trustworthy Colonel Brandon. Unfortunately, Marianne first had to have her heart broken by the dashing but wretched, fortune-seeking Willoughby.

There are several stages of a Big-Willoughby relationship, but the most obvious are Early, Middle, and Late.

For those of you who suspect your current suitor of a couple months to be of such character, you would fall into the “Early Stages” phase. Please go straight to this section. The advice here is part of a purely benevolent attempt on my part to help you guard yourself from falling for this type of man.

If you have fallen for a Big-Willoughby and are several months into the relationship, you should skip directly to the “Middle Stages” passage.

If you have already had your heart sauteed by a Big-Willoughby, please quickly proceed to the “Late Stages” section (you are most likely suffering immensely and are in dire need of some positive reinforcement).
