Worlds - UK Premiere, Odeon Leicester Square, London.

So special, that last Friday, Tom, who turns 43 in July, proposed to 26-year-old Dawson's Creek actress Katie on the top of Paris's Eiffel Tower and she happily accepted.

"Today is a magnificent day," said the smitten actor. "I'm engaged to a magnificent woman. I've never been to the Eiffel Tower. It's Paris, it's a beautiful city, it's very romantic."

The couple were in the city to promote Tom's latest movie the eagerly awaited War Of The Worlds but news of the engagement has suddenly eclipsed the sci-fi blockbuster.

However, for Tom, landing the starring role in the epic Steven Spielberg-directed movie is the icing on the cake of a perfect year so far."It's an epic," he says of the film, which is based on the classic HG Wells story, "This is the biggest single film I've ever been a part of."

Not only that but Tom got to work for a second time with Steven Spielberg, a man he's come to regard as a 'father figure' after bonding with him on their 2002 movie Minority Report.

"It's a dream come true for me to be able to work with Steven again," says the actor. "I grew up watching his movies, studying them. I often tease him that I know his movies better than he does. It's a real lesson in storytelling - every time I look at his films, I learn something.

“I was visiting him on the set of his film Catch Me If You Can when he suggested three movies we could possibly do together. War Of The Worlds was the third," recalls Tom.

"We looked at each other and the lights went on. As soon I heard it, I said, 'Oh my God! War Of The Worlds, absolutely’. That was it."In this latest collaboration Tom stars as Ray Ferrier, a divorced dockworker and less than perfect father who witnesses an extraordinary out-of-this-world event which sets the earth on a collision course with aliens.
