Hailing from Western Massachusetts, 18-year-old Sonya is the second
artist to be featured in the Starbucks Hear Music Debut CD series,
created to introduce new artists. So I'm not surprised that we meet in a Starbucks cafe one sunny morning.

Her debut album, Words Came Back To Me, is out now, and the talented teenager is lined up to play Islington Academy on Wednesday July 18.

nuts4chic What have you been up to?

Sonya Kitchell "I just came back from India. I also had eight dates in May supporting Joe Jackson, and will be headlining my own tour later this summer."

n4c Did you get homesick?

SK "Not really. I see my parents once a month as I have to travel around a lot. I'm moving to New York soon, so hopefully I'll be living the Sex And The City lifestyle! I like London though - it's prettier."

n4c You started singing when you were young. Were your parents cool with it?

SK "I've been singing pretty much my whole life. When I was 12, I started gigging regularly. I started as a jazz singer, and I would go to all these jazz clubs. My mum went with me 'cos I couldn't drive! They were very cool about it.

"My parents are both artists so they've been nothing but supportive. I grew up knowing that it was possible to make a living as an artist - some parents are quite negative but mine were great."

n4c When did you write this album?

SK "I wrote and recorded it when I was 16. I've written so many new songs and I'm trying to figure out what new songs I can play at the gigs. Then I get given the album, which I have to do songs from.

n4c What instruments do you play?

SK "I started playing guitar around the same time I started writing, since I was 12. I play piano, but only enough to write, and occasionally, I like the accordion. I've got four guitars and two cellos - I play that a little too. I always wanted to play the cello, I love it so much.

[Laughs] "I can also play the triangle, the pennywhistle and the
recorder. I also learnt how to play the sitar when I was in India."

n4c What was that like?

SK "My fingers bled a lot but it's not that hard to learn. To master the sitar takes a lifetime, but to get the very basics, you just have to learn the scale and then you can play. It's really cool, and I really liked it. I tried to buy one - I found a really cool electric sitar
that's smaller and which you can travel with - and didn't end up doing it."

n4c Is there a song you wish you had written?

SK "Oh, there's so many. Erm, there are so many amazing songs. I'm really a fan of Bob Dylan, but I don't know if I could pick one. And Beatles songs, they are just the best, from Blackbird to the more political ones. They are so incredible.

"And then, there are Jimi Hendrix tunes. I listen to a lot of different music. I love Bob Marley, I love Billie Holiday, and I love Radiohead."
