Private Parts - The Quest for the Designer Vagina
by Kate Pierce The idea of the ‘designer vagina’ originated in the US, where surgeons have been offering a range of procedures designed to correct
or beautify areas south of the navel for years.
Now there are a
number of British surgeons carrying out similar tucking, trimming and tightening treatments in clinics across the country. These include labioplasty (alterations to the labia), vaginaplasty (tightening of the vagina), fat injections to make the labia look younger, liposuction to the mons pubis (the fleshy mound that covers the pubic bone), hymen reconstruction, and collagen injections to maximise the G-spot.
The popularity of procedures like these has been on the rise in the last few years, with many more women enquiring about genital rejuvenation. With the media giving plenty of attention to these intimate surgical procedures, more women are aware of what they can have done and are opting to seek solutions for problems they have ignored for years.
Surgeons claim that the increased popularity of genital surgery is down to women becoming more demanding of their bodies, and their lives. Modern women want to look and feel good, and if there’s
something they’re unhappy with that they can change, they will.
Women expect to have healthy and satisfying sex lives, and many will undergo operations if they think that they can improve their bodies, and their relationships, by doing so. Women who have avoided being intimate with their partners, or those who avoid communal changing areas at the gym or in shops, now have a whole range of options to consider.
Some women also believe that porn is to blame for making women more self-conscious about their private parts. Television, magazines and the Internet make porn more readily accessible than ever before and so we’re literally seeing more vaginas than we have in the past.
Clare, a magazine editor from South London, explains:
“ The constant barrage of Playboy centrefolds and porn starlets have
left women craving what we call the PPP - the Perfect Porno Pussy.
We’re suddenly paying attention to the appearance of places we’ve
never really looked at before, thinking that a little nip and tuck will make us more confident in ourselves or solve all of our problems in the bedroom.”
There are a lot of women who have had successful genital rejuvenation procedures who claim that their lives have been changed by the surgery. Tara, a 28 year old recruitment consultant, spent six months researching labioplasty before booking herself in for surgery last year. Having been self-conscious about her labia for years, she was pleased to find the surgeon very reassuring and is happy with the results of the procedure.
“ It had got to a point where I wouldn’t even let my boyfriend see me naked, and we were having sex less than usual because of this. I was worried about the risks of surgery - especially coming out looking worse! - but I decided to go for it. After the operation, I was sore for about a month but after that I remember looking at myself and being so happy with how it had turned out. I feel more confident about my body and now I can relax and really enjoy being intimate
with my boyfriend.”
If you are considering plastic surgery, make sure you research the subject well and book initial consultations before making your final decision. It’s vital to consider the implications and details of the
surgery, as well as the risks and side effects, success rates and
recovery time.
