The Food of Love

They often say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and what better way to seduce, or indeed be seduced, than over a romantic, sensuous, candlelit dinner…

Sounds, sights, smells, tastes
and textures can all evoke the
senses making you more
receptive to love

There are a plethora of foods that are rumoured to have aphrodisiac properties but demonstrating a direct link has proven to be very difficult for scientists. I don’t know about you, but for me white coats in laboratories and candlelit dinners really don’t go together. But why is it that certain foods are considered to be sexier than others?

There are probably a few reasons why some foods have gained aphrodisiac status. Hot and spicy foods such as chillies, curries and ginger may make you feel sexy because they get your heart racing, leaving you feeling flushed and sweaty like any good lover should! Not forgetting those foods that are visually reminiscent of the luscious linga, the yummy yoni, or delicious derriere, some of which are bananas, asparagus, oysters, mussels, melons and peaches. Then there are other foods that simply tempt you with the musty scent of sex, such as vanilla, truffles and liquorice.

Sex and the Senses

While some foods might have a physical effect, others may smell reminiscent of sex and some might visually remind you of your lover’s naked body. Perhaps one of the main reasons food and sex seems to be so inextricably linked is that both indulging in the act of love making and devouring your favourite dish totally engage your senses.

The way something smells, looks, tastes and feels will have a large effect on how we perceive it and the quality of experience we associate with it in the future.

In particular, never underestimate your sense of smell. The nose is directly connected to the arousal centre of the brain. Scent is one of the most potent triggers of memory and some smells may evoke a positive memory, which could help to reduce anxiety, and if you’re lucky, remove inhibitions.

For those who are slightly
more adventurous honey can
double up as body paint!

The mind itself is also a very potent aphrodisiac and should not be underestimated. The majority of experts agree the main reason aphrodisiacs work is simply because people believe they do- the placebo effect.

Nutrition for Sex

There are a number of nutrients that can enhance your desire and your performance, both of which are important elements to ensure a passionate love life.

Zinc is an essential micronutrient as it helps women to sustain lubrication and men to synthesize testosterone, which is essential for an enhanced libido. Several foods that are high in zinc have long been considered to be aphrodisiacs including nuts, seeds and seafood. Nuts are also a great source of energy so you shouldn’t find yourself or your lover running out of steam. What’s more, nuts and seeds are a great source of omega-3-fatty acids, which maintain cell membranes and help to transport nutrients to cells. Omega-3 fatty acids are also the precursors of prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances that play a pivotal role in sexual health.

B vitamins prevent fatigue, anxiety and depression and can help to ensure that your sex drive never fails. They are also involved in production of sex hormones in males and females. If you’re feeling stressed, take the contraceptive pill or drink alcohol, be sure to load up on whole grains, beans and leafy green veggies as all of these can deplete B vitamins.

Cheese contains ten times
more phenylethylamine than
chocolate

Then there are some foods, which some may argue are almost as good as sex. Chocolate and cheese both contain a substance called phenylethylamine (PEA), which is a natural amphetamine that the brain manufactures in response to feelings of love. Cheese is a much better source of PEA than chocolate; however, chocolate also contains a caffeine-like substance to get you going, and keep you going, who knows maybe all night long! Unfortunately, current opinion is that chocolate does not contain sufficient PEA to have a significant effect on your sexual performance.

Dinner for Two

Next time you’re planning a romantic meal why not start with something light- king prawns lightly fried with garlic, ginger and chilli. Prawns are an excellent source of micronutrients that are essential for sexual functioning. The garlic, ginger and chilli will get you feeling hot under the collar and ready for action. Follow it with a light meal containing plenty of complex carbohydrates, a good risotto or fresh pasta dish, that will keep you fuelled for your long night of passion.

A fondue is always great, especially chocolate, as it simply tastes divine. The warm, thick liquid is a delight for the senses when coupled with fresh fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, cherries and bananas. The fruit will add a contrasting flavour and texture; they are also perfect for feeding your lover! Serve the meal with a little of your favourite tipple, which can help you both to relax but moderation is definitely the key.
