Traditionally, a “quickie” (sometimes referred to as a “nooner”) was a sexual encounter that occurred between people who
a) had never met before and were immediately overcome by immense sexual attraction toward each other;
b) were afraid to get caught in the act due to being in a public place, at work, sneaking around etc;
c) found themselves in confined quarters and were therefore uncomfortable and wanting to get the sex over with as soon as possible or
d) all of the above.
As such, quickie sex had generally become associated with chance, fleeting encounters between ‘strangers in the night’ (perhaps not so much one-night stands as “three-minute stands”), or by people who were having illicit affairs, e.g., a knee-trembler in the office stationery cupboard between the married Project Manager and the impressionable, nubile young receptionist.
Not anymore. Quickies are no longer regarded as nothing more than slightly, slovenly and sordid sexual clashes between two licentious fly-by-nights. A trend has been growing in which more and more people in long-term relationships are having quickie sex – and getting a damn good kick out of it too.
According to sex experts, no married or co-habiting couple is having lengthy, adventurous, multi-orgasmic encounters every time they climb into bed and nor should they be! For the men in these committed relationships this hardly comes as a surprise. Generally, men are fairly easy to please and are usually equally glad of a thirty-second tumble as they would be of a full-on extended erogenous exploration. But for women to want quickie sex seems to contradict what we have been conditioned to want and to demand from our male partners.
The love scenes in the majority of films show the couples engaged in long, languorous love making sessions. The scientific community, via the media, has consistently informed us to ask our partners to slow down so we could reach orgasm. They’ve been telling us that for so long, in fact, that even men have noticed. The length of time a man can refrain from ejaculating has become an indication of a man’s prowess – the longer he can make the sex last, the better a lover he is. Because let’s face it girls, it’s usually all over once he’s crashed his yoghurt truck.

A slow, sweet sexual encounter filled with lingering, teasing foreplay that lasts for hours can obviously be incredible but who among us in long-term relationships actually has the time, the energy or even the motivation to engage in marathon sex on a regular basis?
Times have changed and so have the standards for sex. Due to busy work schedules, childcare commitments, running errands, cooking meals, housework, going to the gym or (insert your own particular daily activities and obligations here), today’s women rarely have enough time to devote themselves to the kind of endlessly tender and sensuously toe-curling tantra-inspired love-making sessions that books such as “The Joy of Sex” allude to. It is perhaps not surprising then that quickies are becoming increasingly popular among married or cohabiting couples.
