Sex and Religion
From the Diary of Amrevis
Sex is the supreme blossoming of the human consciousness. The ecstasy of a sexual experience is most aptly expressed in the three sublimely attractive words that have been in the Hindu lexicon for thousands of years.
 |
We are naked not just physically
but psychologically as well |
The three words that subsume mankind’s most persistent desire to imbibe the creative spirit: Satyam, Shivam and Sundram. Satyam means truth, Shivam stands for virtue, and Sundram for beauty. Sex is representative of the coming together in us of these basic instincts - truth, virtue and beauty. Sex is too compelling, too tempting and too ecstatic for any mortal to be able to resist, because sex is the ultimate vehicle to pursue the persona of Satyam, Shivam and Sundram.
We are naked not just physically but psychologically as well, when we engage in exploring the most primordial of our desires in the physical shape of our mate. In order to partake the utmost out of one’s sexual activity, one has also to give in an equal measure. You have to give pleasure before you can have it yourself. There has to be an instinctive sharing among the partners in any sexual tryst, an instinctive sharing done on basis of truth, virtue and beauty (Satyam, Shivam and Sundram). But aren’t these the very same qualities we seek when we develop a religious consciousness!
The pursuit of Satyam, Shivam and Sundram has formed the basis of Hindu religion in the ancient era. That was an era when sex was not a taboo subject. There still exist temples of ancient cave art, like the renowned Ajanta and Ellora caves, where Gods and Goddesses are depicted enjoying all forms of sex – heterosexual, homosexual, group sex, lesbianism, oral, anal. The cave arts come as a shock to the modern man, whose values have changed. The sexual freedom the ancient Hindus enjoyed was concomitant of a mythical paradise and the hardening of attitudes today is representative of peoples fall from paradise. But that is the story of almost every culture.

Many religions have in fact preached
that a union with God is like a sexual
climax that goes on forever |
It is not a surprise then that most religious mythologies in the world have parables that once human beings lived in paradise but for some reason they were expelled from it. The parables may hide a deeper meaning as they may signify the notion that we are all born in paradise but during the course of life we lose it. We lose it because in the humdrum of life somehow our values of Satyam, Shivam and Sundram get diluted. Sex still drives us mad with desire but there is lot less truth, virtue and beauty that we can elicit from our sexuality. Lot less Nirvana in sex! But unless we attain a state of Nirvana how can we be fit for paradise! Nirvana is the state of supreme bliss, a bliss that can only be compared with the supreme pleasure that we experience at the height of sexual climax. It is not only we who are seeking God, God too is seeking us. He is ready to invite us back to the paradise. Our craving for Nirvana, for sexual climax, is a proof of God’s intention to have us in paradise.
Many religions have in fact preached that a union with God is like a sexual climax that goes on forever. Sex in many ways is a microcosm of the ecstasy that could be ours if we found God. At least that is what the scriptures say. Our pleasure is not dissociated with the pleasure of the God. When you are making love there is great joy, because sexual pleasure with our loving partner is but a fleeting introduction of the everlasting pleasure that will become ours once we are mentally and psychologically prepared to attain Nirvana, or become truly religious. Sex is the key to comprehend God, and religion has to be firmly moored in sex before it can dare to provide a modicum of guidance to its believers.

Go ahead drive your
pleasures to a new
“guilt free” high! |
The beauty of sexual freedom! The freedom that sets us free to relish the joys of togetherness! The freedom that motivates us to break free from the world of shadows and come alive into the sublime realm of sexual Nirvana! Call me a sinner. Call me immoral if you like. But if you ask me, I will continue to say that the true purpose of religion is to create a society free from sexual taboos, a society like that of the ancient Hindus, a society that can guide us into ways and means of intensifying sexual pleasure, and exploring the boundaries of love. Sex is in fact an expression of a human being’s quest for a higher self, a higher self that resembles Eternity in its sheer creative force.
Tonight when you are about to lose yourself in the arms of your loving mate think of that - that the orgasm you achieve makes God as pleased. Go ahead drive your pleasures to a new “guilt free” high! Cheers!
