I've always rather fancied the idea of taking over a grand country house
and welcoming friends to stay for as long as they wish to enjoy the
facilities, fine living and - this bit is compulsory - laugh
uproariously at any jokes I tell over dinner.
So when CV Travel suggested something unusual in the Dordogne, Britain's latest 'colony' in south-west France, I was keen to put the dream into practice.
Beautiful Le Bouffadou, its sturdy stone walls and daintily mullioned windows suggesting it had been plucked in its entirety from a Country Life magazine feature on the Cotswolds, looks pretty impressive in the brochure.
Suddenly there was no shortage of recruits checking 'no frills' flight
timetables into Bergerac, just up the road.
Then, in the middle of a security scare, came tighter limits on the
luggage budget airlines would carry. The case for an advance party -
taking bags, golf clubs, tennis rackets, even favourite foods - driving
on ahead by car was strong.
Which is how my wife and I found ourselves one Friday evening in a
well-crammed estate car at the Motorail terminal in Calais awaiting the
Avignon-bound overnight sleeper train.
