ECO TOURISM: THE NEW WAVE
by Helen Smith
ECO-TRAVELLERS WITH TASTE…
Yet again the Great British Summer is yet to arrive. So who can blame us for wanting to escape to warmer climes?

Yet when you book your flights to the Maldives, are you aware that your holiday will be inclusive of your own 5* contribution to the islands’ sinking? And as you jet across the Alps for a weekend on the slopes, be warned that carbon emissions from the aircraft you travel in will slowly result in the destruction of one of Europe’s most beautiful mountain ranges.
By 2020, carbon emissions from air travel are estimated to be the biggest contributor to global warming. But unless you have a back yard, replete with tan-inflicting solar panels, white sand and azure paddling pool (not to mention delectable volley-ball players), then travelling is still going to be on your agenda. And rightly so; our ability to traverse the world has opened our eyes to new cultures, consequently enriching our own lives, and those of the indigenous people we meet on our travels - the economic benefits of tourism to local people and destinations is so great, that if we all stopped flying, the development and conservation of worldwide destinations would be drastically affected – for the worse.
So my appeal to you, fellow travellers, is to embrace the era of eco-tourism. Fear not - if the mere phrase ‘eco-tourist’ conjures up images of showering in plastic buckets and sleeping beneath Hessian blankets, then it’s time to update your image bank. These days, eco-warriors have a tan, and manicured nails….
