The Alps In Summertime
See the spectacular Alps in their summer glory.

Chamonix

We started in Chamonix, the real playground of the Alps nestling at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps and second highest in Europe. Registered on the world heritage list for its exceptional surroundings, it's considered the ultimate place to be for all those who love nature and the mountains.

The resort is a highly fashionable destination in both the winter and
summer, and according to our walking guide, over 20% of the population are English.

Chamonix is a bustling town, with exclusive hotels, bars and cafes.
Renowned for its gastronomy, the region also houses some excellent
restaurants. One evening I was lucky enough to dine at the La Maison Carrier where head chef Pierre Carrier's cooking has earned him
international recognition and two Michelin stars.

Surrounded by a couple of empty bottles of Savoie wine and a succession of meticulously-cleaned plates, I swore I wouldn't be able to make it back to the hotel, let alone up the mountain for a vigorous two-hour hike the next day.

In the heart of the action is the friendly, three-star Hotel L'oustalet,
which is both extremely cosy and functional with real rustic charm and a heated outdoor swimming pool.

Chamonix mountians, Rhone Alpes

It's a waste to go to the Alps without enjoying the spectacular views on offer. Sunny, largely south-facing pistes have enchanting views of the valley to Mont Blanc and its striking peaks.

One of the most famous peaks, the jagged Aiguille du Midi, is reached
via a dizzying aerial journey by a two-stage cable car to a chilling
altitude of well over 3,000 metres. This journey is not for anyone with a fear of heights; two white-faced companions clung to me during our swinging ascent to the heavens.

At the summit, the cloud cover was so heavy that I couldn't see more
than three metres in front of me. One of the problems with mountain tourism is that activities are often dictated by the weather - I can only imagine how dazzling the views from the Mont Blanc Terrace are on a clear day.
