Being smug is not an attractive quality – nor is gloating. Yet, when about a foot of snow fell on my second night in Colorado, I couldn’t help but succumb to both traits.
Especially when I sent a picture message to friends who had scoffed at my far-away trip yet come back from Europe with their skis between their legs after a disappointing snowfall.The skies were blue, the sun shining, and the slopes at Winter Park resort were covered – fresh and powdery; it was every ski-lover’s (or snowboarder’s) dream. And we made the most of it; whizzing down the 11,000ft, 70-run mountains that are Mary Jane, Parsenn Bowl and Vasquez Cirque.
Well, the rest of the group were whizzing, given it was only my third time skiing and my first time out of ‘ski-school’, I was happy just to be holding my own. Whilst ‘No Pain, No Jane’ is Mary Jane’s motto, and the peak has been ranked number one for moguls in North America by Skiing Magazine for two years in a row, I was surprised at how beginner-friendly most of the slopes are.
Even on my first day skiing in two years, I was quite confident on the blue-rated (equivalent to an easy red in Europe) Edelweiss, Corona Way and Mary Jane runs, or Forget-Me-Not or Primrose on Parsenn Bowl without any worries of being out of my depth.
And the slopes are so wide – and surprisingly empty, given at one point my two friends and I were the only people on one particular run – there’s no fear of collisions, except, of course, with the ground, when you come across one of those pesky snow snakes.
Whilst the more experienced skiers in my group were happier on the more exhilarating black runs, such as Sleeper and the bumpy Awe Shoot, or off-piste for plenty of tree-lined adventures.
