Mount Mary Jane's birthdayBut we weren’t just here to ski. My friends and I had been invited to stay at the Winter Park Mountain Lodge to celebrate the 31 st birthday of Mary Jane. Now, those who argue prostitution brings nothing positive to a community have probably never been to Colorado, as said mountain is named after a lady of the night. And the locals are happy to make a song and dance, and parade, of this with ice sculptures, festivities and even a look-a-like competition (although no one actually knows what Mary Jane looked like). Whilst many ski destinations are losing their personality and turning into characterless resorts, Winter Park boasts regular events like this to celebrate its community roots. So, not wanting to appear rude, and all in the name of research, we got into the swing of things with a few beers and dinner at Untamed “the locals’ favourite”. It was a typical American steakhouse with all the usuals on the menu - chicken wings, chilli and every type of steak you could ever possibly imagine followed by the biggest portion of dessert - Southwest Mud Pie - I think I’ve ever seen. For those of us who were still full in the morning, the thought of breakfast wasn’t appealing. So it was lucky we were kicking off the day with First Tracks which is a tour of the mountain with two instructors at 7.30am – before the lifts open to the public, so you have all the runs to yourself. It was here our guide JT broke the devastating news to me. My technique was all wrong. Apparently I was leaning back too much and putting too much strain on my legs – hence why it felt as though I had run a marathon in just two days. Within minutes, it all began to come together – I hadn’t realised skiing could be this easy, and this much fun. After a few hassle-free runs (with just the odd snow snake bringing me back down to earth), we’d worked up an appetite so we went for breakfast at The Lodge at Sunspot – a beautiful log and stone lodge at 10,700 feet with a 360-degree view of the Continental Divide. Things, I didn’t think, were going to get any better than this – then I tried the waffles. Far too stuffed to go skiing again, we came down the mountain and headed back to the hotel for our Grand Adventures Snowmobile Tour – one of the quickest, and easiest, ways to check out paths that are off the beaten track.
