Pampering and Night Life
Feeling more than pleased with my accomplishment, I treated myself to some much-needed pampering at Copper Athletic Club. There’s also a gym and fitness classes too, but I was more interested in the sauna and steam room – finished with an hour-long massage to soothe the aches in my legs and the knots in my back.
Fully recharged, I met the others for dinner at JJ’s Rocky Mountain Tavern, where, again, the food was amazing and the wine flowed – too easily. Chatting away, we realised we were the last ones in the restaurant and the night was still young. So it was off on a tour of Copper’s finest drinking establishments – including the Pravda vodka bar, which sold the spirit in every flavour possible.
After a few in there and a group karaoke session, it was over to McGillycuddy’s Irish bar for beer and playing pool with the locals. Maybe it was the altitude, but by 3am, and more games lost than won, we called it a night and braved the freezing temperature to walk back to our apartments for our early flight home.
After my week-long trip, although I didn’t emerge as the next Chemmy Alcott, my confidence had soared and my technique had improved – definitely down to the quality of the runs at Winter Park and Copper Mountain, and, thanks to my learned instructor, skiing no longer seems like an uphill struggle - now more of a downhill glide.
