nuts4chic Tell us about yourself: Slip of a Girl Like most women, I find myself wanting to begin the definition of myself by my relationships and family, i.e., married with children. But while my children and husband (and the occasional other odd family member – we have lots of odd family members) show up in my blog, my blog isn't really about them. Or perhaps I should say that they are people and roles I love, but that with this blog I can explore the aspects of myself outside of family roles and my job. Like being an opinionated 40-something, female feminist who still finds the world a romantic and erotic place despite the challenges and what media and marketers tell us it is. I started my blog under a pen name, out of insecurity I suppose, but I'm awfully glad I did as now that it has evolved I'm glad to have retained my privacy and that of my family's. n4c Why did you start a blog? SoaG I'd like to say I had some notion of why I started, some clever idea or philosophy I was pursuing – or even a sparkling personality that I knew the world was waiting for (lol). But the honest truth is that I just love lingerie and wanted a place to talk about it without my family and friends. I guess I viewed the blog as my place to explore my passion, and I really didn't think about any other possibilities or reasons for it. At first my attempts were feeble, embarrassingly so. I often toy with the idea of deleting those old posts but then I figure part of this whole blog business is about the process of conversations, and it is nice to see what the blog once was and what it is now. n4c What is your blog about? SoaG On the surface, as I've said, the blog is about lingerie. Which sounds simple enough (shopping, crafting/sewing, and other girly stuff), but I've discovered that lingerie is even more complicated or symbolic than just “fashion.” Such intimate apparel exposes issues of eroticism, sexuality, relationships, body image, confidence, and the blurred line between frivolous vanity and a healthy self-image. I've also discovered lingerie illuminates matters of gender and inequality – not just in the expected areas of media portrayals, marketing misnomers, and other misogynistic missteps, but in our great debate about gender itself.
For example, the subject of cross dressing (something I previously knew next to nothing about) has made me question not just male roles and societal pressures, but how I feel about that as a woman. Some days this blog is about as comfortable as a too-small-thong. *wink* But I wouldn't change a thing either. Through my blog, I've not only discovered that I'm not alone with what my family and friends call “my obsession,” but I’ve also met some wonderful people, too. It's really because of all of them that I've learned so much. For such little bits of nylon, satin and lace, lingerie is amazingly complicated stuff.
