Prettiness is the buzzword for this spring's beauty
trends. Forget last season's vampish look - we're looking ahead to a
more fresh-faced and feminine style.
But there's no need to throw away the mascara or pink lipstick as they
can be easily adapted to fit the new trends.
"We're not trying to reinvent the wheel this season - we just want to
make girls look gorgeous and feminine," says MAC make-up artist Gordon
Espinet.

"Skin like you've just stepped out of a moisturiser ad isn't just a part
of many make-ups this season, it is the make-up," says Gordon.
"It's the glow that comes from within when you've got incredibly
hydrated skin. The new naked face is indefinably made up but still very
'done', projecting an enigmatic radiance."
Don't be deceived into thinking that you can simply leave the house
without any make-up on. As with all looks, this 'polished' look needs to
be perfected.
Working out where to highlight and contour with concealer, base and
powder is the tricky part, and very rarely is foundation smoothed over
the whole face - just where it's needed. Keep eyes simple and
mascara-less, brows groomed, cheeks with a tiny amount of neutral
blusher and natural-coloured lips.

MAXED-OUT EYES
In terms of faces that have a firm focus on one features, it's all about
eyes this summer. Golden girls may prefer subtle gold shimmery eyes,
while rock chicks can apply lashings of come-to-bed dark eyeliner, or be
the envy of other women by wearing white eyeshadow - the season's
hottest shade.
But be careful how you apply that white eyeshadow. Gordon suggests using
pencil in the rim to brighten the whites of your eye rather than
applying it under the eye or above the socket. Try an off-white shade or
even an ice-blue pencil.
The smoky-eye rock-chick look is edgy, he adds.
"They're not about cute, sexy or sweet, they're about cool - it's rock
star make-up with femininity because the eyelashes still have an
essential girliness about them," he says.

SUPERMODEL MAKE-UP

| Linda Evangelista sports the natural look |
Take some tips from supermodels such as Linda Evangelista and opt for a
groomed face this season. You'll need velvety perfected skin, jet stream
eyebrows, luscious lips and a perfectly judged touch of cheek contour.
"You'll need a highlight on the top of the cheekbone, contoured temples,
cheekbones and jawline," says Gordon.
"Eyes are technically shaded (light on the browbone, medium in the
crease, dark on the outer corners), always with a curled and mascara-ed
lash and streamlined brows to frame the face."
He adds "The mouth must be defined but never exaggerated, lightest in
the centre and slightly deeper around the Cupid's bow and outer
corners."

Chromeglass in Chromaliving, £12.50; Nars Artist Palette, £53 from

PINK LADY
From intense fuchsia to bashful corals, pink is on everyone's lips and
cheeks. There's also a return to lipstick as make-up artists decide to
turn their backs - or brushes - on high-shine gloss.
"Coral, coral, coral - it's as flattering as candlelight," says Gordon.

If you're using lip liner, make sure it's waxy so you can easily blend
it into the lip and it doesn't look too obvious. Lightly tinged rosy
cheeks look soft and innocent, as if you've just stepped in from the
sun.
Break the rules by applying powder blusher with your fingers for a more
natural look, or use a blush stick, a cream version or even a tint.
Place dots on the apples of your cheeks and rub in for a subtle flush.
