| Colosseum at night |
In all the eulogising about the sites, I have paid scant notice to another of the many virtues of Rome, namely the food. We had it all, stunning gnocchi and succulent Roast potatoes in a back street tratorria on the Friday night, a wonderful candle lit meal on a garden terrace restaurant (La Capellete) on the Saturday night and then a sumptuous bruschetta followed by ravioli on the Sunday, all washed down with a bottle of the only drinkable Frascati I have ever found. In fact, in comparison, the food in Rome was quite reasonably prices. For the Saturday night, two courses, a bottle of wine and coffees came to approximately 70 euros. This is good value compared to any city in the world. Oh yes, we also managed to squeeze in a quick Chinese banquet on the Sunday lunch time, just for research purposes following the one we had in Paris. I have to say that for 7.80 Euros, it was good value for money.
Rome is wonderful, Rome is aesthetically stunning, Rome is everything you want and more from the city and whether or not you throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, it will have you wanting to return again and again.
I would go back again in shot, but this time I would be prepared and would be a bit more savvy. This time I would be prepared for the credit card bill that awaited me, I would know that using the Metro is a good alternative to wearing out the better part of two pairs of shoes and I would also know that when in Rome, the best thing to do, is to do as the Romans do and take it easy.
Rome’s been there for thousands of years already, so there’s a pretty good chance it will all be there the next time you go, so don’t try and do it all in one go. Just relax, wander about a bit, see what you want to see and then sit back in one of the many bars that litter the Roman streets and enjoy life. That’s what it’s there for.
